Richeson 75 (2014) - "Animals, Birds & Wildlife" competition catalogs are out

I just received my catalog today from the "Richeson 75"- "Animals, Birds & Wildlife" competition.  I was excited to have 5 pieces selected for the 2014 catalog.  Above, my painting titled "The Playoffs" made it into the top 75.

The "Richeson" School of Art & Gallery is dedicated to furthering the awareness and appreciation of original art and the artists that make it.

This is the cover of this years catalog by an artist named "Denise Hawkins."

These four paintings of mine are "Meritorious" entries:

Oil painting of a bluebird with study guides - "Bluebird Watching"

"Bluebird Watching"

Oil on panel      14 x 11"

I finished up a new oil painting for my next art show.  It is called "Bluebird Watching."  I placed a pair of binoculars on top of some old field guilds including one by Stokes, and a book on "bluebirds" that belonged to my late father.  The "bluebird" is standing on some beaver bark sticks looking down, as if he is the one doing all of the watching.

I started this painting a while back on a larger canvas size.  It was bothering me that everything was bigger than life, so I scratched the first painting and began the 14 x 11" size.  It just seemed more natural to me to paint it true to size.

Below is an image of the finished painting all framed up.  It will be for sale at the next "Celebration of Fine Art" show in Scottsdale, Arizona.  The show opens on January 17th and runs for 10 weeks.  This show brings together 100 of the finest artists from across the country.   Painters, jewelers, sculptors, wood turners, ceramic artists will all be together under one roof working together.

This oil painting will also be available in a limited edition of giclee prints on canvas.

PAINTING A WOLF IN OIL - "Wolf with Magpie Feather" - "Bye Bye Birdie"

In progress

A few months ago I started an "oil painting of a wolf."  Attached are some of the in-progress painting images.  I am skipping the earliest sketches of this painting because I unfortunately took those photos with my cell phone and cannot seem to download them to my computer.  So ... after several failed attempts to retrieve those first images, I am beginning with some photos of the early stage of the painting and after most of the initial color has already been blocked in.

In progress 2

I had to do many layers of color in order to achieve the softness of the fur.  The eye was tricky as well as the proper placement of the ear.  I had to redo those areas several times to get it right.  I had some initial constructive criticism to help me see my problem areas from friend and "master animal & bird sculptor Ken Newman."  He knows animals inside and out, and was very helpful.  ( I am not sure he will approve or not of the finished painting as far as proportions go, but I am happy with the finished result.     Scroll down to see ......

Still early on in the painting here

Continuing to add layers in the fur

Working more on the eye, nose and shadows

"Bye Bye Birdie"

Painting in the "feather" helped to keep my "birds in art" theme going as I try to branch out into some new "wildlife" paintings.

This oil painting will be custom framed and available at the opening of the "Celebration of Fine Art" in Scottsdale.  The opening is on January 17th and brings together 100 fine artists from across the country.  We all set up studios there and work and sell our art over the 10 week duration of the event.

(A special thanks to the photographer of this wolf image - "Joe Casselli" who gave me permission to paint it.)

"Scout" - A Little Rescue Dog - oil painting

"Scout"

The past two weekends have been spent doing an art show in north Scottsdale.  All went well and now I am back to painting again which feels great!  This year for the 12 days of Christmas I will be starting a new oil painting every day for my next big art show which opens on January 17th.

Above is a little oil painting of one of the artist's dog named "Scout."  He was a rescue dog and was so cute I couldn't resist doing a painting of him....(even though my specialty is painting "birds."

This painting measures 6x6" and was painted in oil on a wood panel.
