BIRD SERIES - "Hummingbirds In Flight"

"Hummingbirds In Flight"

This is an oil painting of hummingbirds in flight I just finished on two gallery wrapped canvas.  The top piece is 12"x 36" and the bottom canvas is a 36"x 36"  to make the overall size of 48"x 36".   I painted the clouds around the edges so the painting can be hung with a few inches of space between them.  I thought it would be a little more interesting this way and with a more "contemporary" look.  The top gold band and the bottom section of the painting were created with various layers of texture.  I did a random leaf pattern embossed into the texture and allowed it to dry that way.  Once the paint was applied it created a nice "old world" look.  The sky was fun to paint and I was hoping to create some "drama" with the hummingbirds in flight.

This  painting will be for sale at my upcoming show at the Celebration of Fine Art.  You can contact me if you would like more information about this painting at:

BIRD SERIES - Quail "Dan"

We have so many quail out here in the Southwest.  They are so fun to watch.  The little babies will follow their mother anywhere.  They just scoot on out across the road in front of you in such a hurry.  I remember one quail family followed their mother right on into my sister's house when the door was left open.  Once they realized that was not where they wanted to be, they scattered all over the living room absolutely terrrified!  I guess it took hours for them to find the courage to run back out the front door, but eventually they did.

This little oil painting I just finished is actually a California quail.  He is part of my "bird series" and I named him "Dan."  It is painted on a 6"x 6" wood panel, and will be framed and for sale at the Celebration of Fine Art show on January 16th.  ( )

TRAVEL JOURNALS with "Poste Vaticane" stamps

These are a couple of my new "Travel Journals."  The first "Travel Journal" is 12"x 4" and includes an old "Poste Vaticane" postage stamp.  The small one is only 4"x 4" and also includes another "Poste Vaticane" stamp.  Both are on the deep gallery wrapped canvas.  The edges of the canvas are painted black.  The stamps are from a collection of my grandfather's.  The stamps are really interesting and work well with the images of St. Peter's dome.  I incorporate things from my travels as well as old maps, illuminated manuscripts, gold leaf and whatever else I can collage into them to help tell a story or to create a memory.  They are fun to make, but are extremely time consuming and tedious.  There are many layers of paint and collage elements, texture and of course the right stamp.  They are finsihed with two coats of varnish to help bring out the colors and to preserve them.  They will be for sale at the Celebration of Fine Art show which opens on January 16th.

Landscape - "Autumn Dance"

"Autumn Dance"

This little oil painting measures 7"x 11" on a wood panel.  The autumn colors are some of my favorite colors to paint.   There is something special about the way the trees change color at that time of year, like flames of gold.

"There is a time for everything,
And a season for every activity under heaven.

Floral - "Sunflower with Pears II"

"Sunflower with Pears II"

This oil painting was painted on gallery wrapped canvas, 10"x 30"  I set up a "still life" with some beautiful sunflowers and lovely pears.  I photographed all sorts of arrangements on a pretty fabric and had lots to work off of for future paintings.  This one is no longer available, but I love to do commissions.  I also have giclees available of my "Sunflower and Pears" in a square format.  (On a previous post.)  You can contact me for information at:

Landscape in Oil - "Autumn Reflections"

"Autumn Reflections"

Autumn landscape in oil.  (SOLD)  This painting is 36"x 48" and I sold it at my show last winter.  It was an "impressionistic autumn landscape".   I painted it on gallery wrapped canvas and the oil paint was applied thick over a reflective background.   I have worked on some more impressionistic landscapes like this on a smaller scale for my upcoming show in January.  My main focus will still be the "still lifes with the birds" however I also enjoy painting  other subjects from time to time.  For more information you can contact me at:

Mixed media oil painting on wood panel.  (SOLD)
This is from my "Contemporary Icon" series.   As I am preparing for an upcoming show in January, I haved moved into a more "realistic" style of painting than when I was doing these "abstracted icons."  I did have success with this series and I still enjoy doing them from time to time, and also will do commissions.  They are fun to paint and I only have a few left for sale from this series.  I have often been criticized for painting various subjects instead of having "one consistent style of work."  I suppose I look at this as an opportunity to show another side of me.  I love to explore various things and I learn something each time.  Sometimes my mood is to paint "landscapes" other times figurative.  Most recently I have been working on more realistic still lifes that include "birds."  I am very excited about my new direction and I will be posting the new work very soon.  They are extremely time consuming, but I have really enjoyed the challenge and am getting excited about the opportunity to get a response from the new work.

This is a mixed media oil painting on canvas.  It is a painting in my "Contemporary Icon" series of an angel.  It is framed in a very ornate frame that I think works very well with the piece.  The halo and wings are done with gold leaf.  It is available at one of my galleries.  You can contact me for in information or visit my "links" page.
