BIRD SERIES - "Hummingbirds In Flight"

"Hummingbirds In Flight"

This is an oil painting of hummingbirds in flight I just finished on two gallery wrapped canvas.  The top piece is 12"x 36" and the bottom canvas is a 36"x 36"  to make the overall size of 48"x 36".   I painted the clouds around the edges so the painting can be hung with a few inches of space between them.  I thought it would be a little more interesting this way and with a more "contemporary" look.  The top gold band and the bottom section of the painting were created with various layers of texture.  I did a random leaf pattern embossed into the texture and allowed it to dry that way.  Once the paint was applied it created a nice "old world" look.  The sky was fun to paint and I was hoping to create some "drama" with the hummingbirds in flight.

This  painting will be for sale at my upcoming show at the Celebration of Fine Art.  You can contact me if you would like more information about this painting at:  br1fineart@cox.net

BIRD SERIES - Quail "Dan"

"DAN"

We have so many quail out here in the Southwest.  They are so fun to watch.  The little babies will follow their mother anywhere.  They just scoot on out across the road in front of you in such a hurry.  I remember one quail family followed their mother right on into my sister's house when the door was left open.  Once they realized that was not where they wanted to be, they scattered all over the living room absolutely terrrified!  I guess it took hours for them to find the courage to run back out the front door, but eventually they did.

This little oil painting I just finished is actually a California quail.  He is part of my "bird series" and I named him "Dan."  It is painted on a 6"x 6" wood panel, and will be framed and for sale at the Celebration of Fine Art show on January 16th.  ( http://celebrateart.com/ )

TRAVEL JOURNALS with "Poste Vaticane" stamps

    'POSTE VATICANE' TRAVEL JOURNALS

These are a couple of my new "Travel Journals."  The first "Travel Journal" is 12"x 4" and includes an old "Poste Vaticane" postage stamp.  The small one is only 4"x 4" and also includes another "Poste Vaticane" stamp.  Both are on the deep gallery wrapped canvas.  The edges of the canvas are painted black.  The stamps are from a collection of my grandfather's.  The stamps are really interesting and work well with the images of St. Peter's dome.  I incorporate things from my travels as well as old maps, illuminated manuscripts, gold leaf and whatever else I can collage into them to help tell a story or to create a memory.  They are fun to make, but are extremely time consuming and tedious.  There are many layers of paint and collage elements, texture and of course the right stamp.  They are finsihed with two coats of varnish to help bring out the colors and to preserve them.  They will be for sale at the Celebration of Fine Art show which opens on January 16th.

Landscape - "Autumn Dance"

"Autumn Dance"

This little oil painting measures 7"x 11" on a wood panel.  The autumn colors are some of my favorite colors to paint.   There is something special about the way the trees change color at that time of year, like flames of gold.

"There is a time for everything,
And a season for every activity under heaven.

Floral - "Sunflower with Pears II"

"Sunflower with Pears II"

This oil painting was painted on gallery wrapped canvas, 10"x 30"  I set up a "still life" with some beautiful sunflowers and lovely pears.  I photographed all sorts of arrangements on a pretty fabric and had lots to work off of for future paintings.  This one is no longer available, but I love to do commissions.  I also have giclees available of my "Sunflower and Pears" in a square format.  (On a previous post.)  You can contact me for information at:  br1fineart@cox.net

Landscape in Oil - "Autumn Reflections"

"Autumn Reflections"

Autumn landscape in oil.  (SOLD)  This painting is 36"x 48" and I sold it at my show last winter.  It was an "impressionistic autumn landscape".   I painted it on gallery wrapped canvas and the oil paint was applied thick over a reflective background.   I have worked on some more impressionistic landscapes like this on a smaller scale for my upcoming show in January.  My main focus will still be the "still lifes with the birds" however I also enjoy painting  other subjects from time to time.  For more information you can contact me at:  br1fineart@cox.net

CONTEMPORARY ICON SERIES - "Adornment"

ADORNMENT

Mixed media oil painting on wood panel.  (SOLD)
This is from my "Contemporary Icon" series.   As I am preparing for an upcoming show in January, I haved moved into a more "realistic" style of painting than when I was doing these "abstracted icons."  I did have success with this series and I still enjoy doing them from time to time, and also will do commissions.  They are fun to paint and I only have a few left for sale from this series.  I have often been criticized for painting various subjects instead of having "one consistent style of work."  I suppose I look at this as an opportunity to show another side of me.  I love to explore various things and I learn something each time.  Sometimes my mood is to paint "landscapes" other times figurative.  Most recently I have been working on more realistic still lifes that include "birds."  I am very excited about my new direction and I will be posting the new work very soon.  They are extremely time consuming, but I have really enjoyed the challenge and am getting excited about the opportunity to get a response from the new work.

FLORAL SERIES - "Lily of the Valley"

Lily of the Valley

This painting is really from my "Old World" series, but also fits into my "Floral series" of paintings.  I did this one years ago, it was a series of three 44"x 30".   I have started to become interested in doing more in this style again.  I love to create interesting backgrounds first and often will add gold leaf elements.  In this painting I created the border in gold.  I always start with the "red" underpainting so that once the gold leaf is applied, it helps to create the "old world" feel.  Many layers of paint are then washed over the surface and wiped off again numerous times to help create the aged look.  It was painted in "casein."

Travel Journal "Torso of Aphrodite"

Here is one of my new "Travel Journals" on 7"x 5" gallery wrapped canvas.  The edges are painted black and it features "The Torso of Aphrodite" with a beautiful postage stamp from Paraguay.    My interest in stamps started with a few binders of gorgeous stamps that my grandfather had.  He was a stamp collector.  A few of the binders of stamps were tucked away in storage for many years after his passing, and were never really discovered until my adult life.  I always thought they were interesing and many were quite beautiful.  I started to collect them from my own travels and over the years started to incorporate them into some of my paintings.  I now have a few collectors and friends that mail me interesting stamps to use in my artwork.  It is always fun to create a memory for someone and to place one of the beautiful stamps into the piece.  These make wonderful gifts.

Old World Style - Reclining Figure

This piece was also painted in casein.  The original was 30"x 30" on artist cotton rag paper.   This beautiful soft fabriano paper works fantastic with this "old world" effect.   A layer of texture is applied quickly over the paper as a primer, careful not to cover every inch of the paper.  Leaving areas unprimed will help to create all of the wonderful patches and shadows once I apply the paint.  The paint is absorbed into the unprimed areas quickly and helps to create this wonderful aged look.  Several layers of paint are applied and rubbed back out with a rag, over and over until the desired effect is achieved.  Then the figure is ready to begin.     I painted so many of these back when this "old world" look was so popular.  It must have been about 15 years ago, because my daughter is now 16.  I remember doing a lot of these during that time.  I am seeing a bit of a come back to this "old world" look, or maybe I am just hopeful because I love to paint  them.  I am starting to see this style in some of the magazines as well as in many of the luxury homes I get to see while doing installs from the gallery I represent.  My original painting is long gone now, but prints are available in small sizes only.

Old World Style figurative painting

Another figure painting with casein.

I did this painting a long time ago when I was often working with casein pigments.  It works so well with this "old world" style.  I came across some of my old sketch books and also found some photographs of  my earlier work.  I can't remember the title I gave her, but I just really enjoyed painting these figurative pieces.  Back in the day....I painted a lot in this style for the art company I worked for.  An idea or a pose would be taken from one of the "old masters" and then incorporated into a new "old world" style  painting.   It was part of my training I guess, and I loved doing it.  I am currenly working extra hard and long as I am preparing for the next Celebration of Fine Art show which opens in January 2010.  It is such a fabulous show to be a part of, bringing 100 artists together from all over the country to exhibit and work together for the ten week show.   I am also working as a part time art consultant right now and am dividing my time between the gallery job and my own painting.  As I am moving into a more detailed and realistic style of painting, each one can be quite time consuming, so I will occasionally post some of my earlier works until I complete my new series.  If you are interested in reading a little bit about the Celebration of Fine Art show you can see the web page at:  http://www.celebrateart.com/    This year will be the 20th anniversary of that show, and it will be my 5th year participating.  I can hardly wait, however I have so much to do before it opens.

Old World style painting "Classical Dance"

"Classical Dance"

This painting was painted on 100% cotton rag paper.  (30"x 30").   I started by applying a texture medium over the paper first which helps to create a distressed look once it drys.  It was painted in casein which also works well for this "old world" effect.  Casein is actually a milk based pigment, and is water soluble and permanent.   It drys with a matte-like effect.  I don't paint with casein as often as I did some years back, but it is a wonderful medium to work with when trying to achieve the "old world" look that I love so much.   The original "Classical Dance" sold, but I have prints available in a variety of sizes.  You can contact me for more infornation at:  br1fineart@cox.net

Old World Style Floral - "Autumn Song"

"Autumn Song"

This is a mixed media oil painting that I did on artists cotton rag paper.  The paper is 44" x 30" but with the elegant frame, it measures 51 1/2" x 38".  (There is glass on it)   It has an "old world" feel to it and includes lots of interesting little treasures under the texture of the painting, like pieces of old maps, script, gold leaf, and of course a beautiful postage stamp from Rome.   This painting has many layers in the underpainting before I began to paint the bouquet of flowers.  I actually did this one quite a number of years ago, but someone suggested that I post it.  I have had it hanging in my home now for some time and am ready to part with it should it find the right home.
